Sung Siew Sandakan the champs

KOTA KINABALU: SM Sung Siew Sandakan (SSSS) clinched the overall title at the MSSS Aquatic Championship which ended at Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex Aquatic Centre on Sunday.
They won a total of 18 golds, six silvers and seven bronzes to top the medal tally. Second place went to SMK Muhibbah Sandakan (SMMS) with 12 golds, one silver and one bronze, and third place was SJKE Chung Hwa Kota Kinabalu (SCHKK) with six golds, seven silvers and five bronzes while last year’s champions Malaysia Sabah Sports School only managed fourth place with five golds, 12 silvers and 16 bronzes.

Seven meet records were set with Samuel Ng Chong Cheng from SMMS and Denise Koshy of SCHKK contributing two each.
The former set a new time of 24.83 seconds in the boys 13-15 age group’s 50m freestyle and 44.36s in the 100m freestyle while the latter competing in the girls 12 & below age group recorded a new time of 37.93s in the 50m breaststroke and 1:25.83s in the 100m breaststroke.
Other records came from Gerald Tsen Xiang Zhi from SMMS in the boys 16-18’s 50m butterfly (26.32s), Thien Oi Yie from SSSS in the girls 16-18’s 50m butterfly (55.36s) and Loo Yie Bing also from SSSS in the girls 13-13’s 100m freestyle (59.54s).
In the best swimmer awards, the boys Under-18 category went to Gerald Tsen who won four golds and one silver with the girls title going to Thien Oi with seven golds.

In the Under-15 category, the boys title went to Samuel Ng with eight golds, one bronze, and Loo Yie Bing with nine gold took the girls title, while the title for the boys and girls in the Under-12 categories went respectively to Ignacio Wong Hao Zhe with four golds, two silvers and Denise Koshy with five golds, one silver and one bronze.

A total of 183 athletes took part in the two-day competition organised by Kota Kinabalu District Schools Sports Council with support from Sabah Aquatic Sports Association (Sasa).

The closing ceremony was held on Sunday with Jikran Mahmud representing Assistant Minister of Trade and Industry Azhar Datuk Hj Matussin as the guest of honour.
