Dissolution of Parliament is the last resort: Lajim
KOTA KINABALU: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Sabah Strategy and Elections Director Datuk Lajim Ukin (pic) says dissolution of Parliament is the last resort if all the country’s stabilisation efforts are not achieved.

However, he personally felt that would not happen given the overwhelming support from the ruling as well as opposition parties for Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to continue leading the country.

“For me, this is the last option because according to the Election Commission (EC), the expenditure for a general election is about half billion ringiit, which is better spent on stimulating the country’s economy.

“That is possible only if there is no consensus in Parliament to decide who will become the Prime Minister. However, this is very unlikely in view of the overwhelming support for Dr Mahathir to be the Prime Minister,” he said.

He said this when asked on the possibility of a general election to be called following shocking political developments in the country which saw Dr Mahathir resigning as Prime Minister and re-appointed as interim Prime Minister.

Dr Mahathir has also resigned as the Chairman of Bersatu, which had earlier withdrawn from the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition.

Lajim hoped the political turmoil would be resolved soon through the appointment of Dr Mahathir as Prime Minister and the selection of a new Cabinet for the sake of national stability.

“This is important to avoid the situation affecting the country’s development.

“I urge all parliamentarians to be strong-minded and continue to support Dr Mahathir as the new Prime Minister,” he said.
