Sabah firms secure RM12m orders at Dubai food fair
KOTA KINABALU: Five local food companies signed contracts and Memorandum of Intent (MOI) worth RM12 million with international companies during the annual  Gulfood 2020 25th Anniversary celebration in Dubai, recently.

Trade and Industry Assistant Minister Azhar  Datuk Matussin said he was pleased with such achievement as it showed that Sabah products have penetrated the international market.

“I headed the trade delegation comprising five Sabah companies together with Department of Industrial Development and Research (DIDR) officers under my ministry, last week.

“The five Sabah companies have set up their booths at the event to promote their  food products. As a result, the companies signed three contracts and five MOIs with different countries in the event starting this year,” he said.

Azhar said the local companies that have signed three contracts to export local snacks, non-salted dried shrimp, instant noodles, crispy fish skin and prawn paste were:

Borneo Oosom Sdn Bhd-Hpro Global Sdn Bhd signed a contract with a Thailand company, NJ Fruits Thailand-Saya International worth RM8.84 million involving 60 containers (40 footer) to export Semporna Crispy Fish Skin with several flavours like salted fish and cheese for two years and an option of three more years.

Magnawave Sdn Bhd signed a contract with MK Broxid, Kuwait worth RM400,000 to supply two containers (20 footer) of non-salted dried shrimp, for this year.

Magnawave Sdn Bhd signed a contract with Tammiah Food (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) worth RM400,000 to supply two containers (20 footer) of non-salted dried shrimp for this year.

The companies involved in signing the MOIs were:

Innomatt Food Industry with International Athwaq Trading Company from Saudi Arabia worth RM262,400 to supply four containers (40 footer) per year containing local crackers, snacks and instant noodle of various flavours.

Innomatt Food Industry with NS Group from Madagascar, Africa worth RM393,600 to supply six containers (40 footer) per year for the same food products.

Lados Sdn Bhd with Enas Khudang from Sri Lanka worth RM960,000 to supply four containers whereby one container for every three months this year containing local prawn paste from Sabah.

Innomatt Food Industry with New Maiwand Aziz from Afghanistan worth RM81,600 to supply three containers per year of local crackers, snacks and instant noodle of various flavours.

Innomatt Food Industry with Ami Trading from South Korea worth RM429,000 to supply five containers of local crackers, snacks, and instant noodle of various flavours.

Azhar said local food products have demand from international companies as there are expatriates in Dubai, UAE whereby of its 3.7 million population, Filipinos accounted for three per cent followed by nine per cent Bangladeshis, 51 per cent Indians and Pakistanis and 6,000 Malaysians.

He said there is a market niche for Sabah food products in Dubai.

“We plan to bring more Sabah companies to the same event next year scheduled in February. Hence, we encourage Sabah companies to make efforts and grab opportunities to promote and sell their products at international market.

“However, they need to register with the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) that has 400 Sabah companies out of 22,000 companies in Malaysia before participating in any international events.

“They must be companies with ‘Sdn Bhd’ and have export quality on their products like acquiring certifications that are internationally recognised such as Halal certifications, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) on food safety.
