Support for Upko Ranau still strong: Abidin
RANAU: Paginatan Assemblyman cum Ranau Upko Division interim chief, Datuk Abidin Madingkir, said support for Upko in Ranau is still strong despite the departure of Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin from the party.

He said he was confident that the party would emerge stronger and its doors are always open for everyone to join or rejoin the party.

“As a matter of fact, Ranau Upko has more than 16,000 members. Is it true that 5,000 supporters, as claimed by Ewon, quit Upko? We are confident that we are still strong,” he told a press conference at his home in Kg Pasir Putih, here.

Abidin thanked Ewon and his supporters especially for their roles in establishing the party and making it strong.

On Tuesday, Ewon, an Upko co-founder and supreme council member, announced he is quitting the party along with some 5,000 members, including Ranau Division committee members.

He cited the failure of the Upko leadership and the Government to resolve the longstanding illegal immigrant problem in Sabah and the inconsistent stand of the party’s top leaders over the issue.

“After consulting with leaders of the division and branches as well as Ranau Upko members, I, along with members of the division’s committee, Youth, Women and Komulakan movements, as well as members numbering around 5,000 plus resigned from Upko and relinquished all our positions with immediate effect,” he said.
