KOTA KINABALU: The Public Works Department (PWD) will liaise with the developer of a building project in the city about the cracks that have formed on Jalan Haji Saman.
“We will ask the developer to make good the road after their project has been completed later,” a PWD spokesman told Daily Express when the issue was raised to the department recently.

He said the project in question is still ongoing.
“The damage on the road should stop after they have completed constructing the foundation of their site,” he added.
The spokesman was responding to a complaint by a concerned motorist who feared that a large sinkhole would appear on the road should nothing be done to address the problem.
“I noticed the cracks are getting bigger and what is more worrying is that more cracks are appearing in the area,” said the motorist.

He added that there is an urgent need to attend to the problem at the early stage to prevent the authorities from having to fork out a huge sum of taxpayers’ money to repair the damage if it gets worse.
“Perhaps the developer can consider using other methods at their construction site to reduce the vibrations,” he added.

He also pointed out that traffic flow going in and out of the city will be severely affected should that part of the road suddenly cave in later.
“This is one of the major roads in the city and it gets busier during the afternoon peak hours as most are using the stretch to exit the city,” he said.
