Lack of monitoring on PPR projects

PAPAR: Relevant departments and agencies are urged to be more alert when monitoring government projects especially involving People’s Housing Projects (PPR) to avoid problems in future.

Deputy Chief Minister cum Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Jaujan Sambakong said many of these projects have started to “reveal” hidden problems whether its structure or amenities.

He said these problems were believed due to the work implementation especially poor supervision or monitoring by relevant departments on the contractors involved.

“The government spent a lot on these houses. It is rather unfortunate that the residents could not benefit (from the PPRs) due to the issues.

“So we will highlight these issues to the relevant parties as there are problems that should not be ignored. There are a lot of PPRs constructed which are in an uncomfortable condition for the tenants,” he told reporters during his visit at PPR Taman Kinarut Ria, here, Thursday.

Jaujan said unsupervised or improper monitoring works for these houses would not only result negatively towards the government but also to future tenants as the structures will face issues in terms of maintenance and safety.

With several PPRs facing problems, this is clearly going against the State Government’s mission to provide homes for the people as it was to ensure that the projects completed are supposed to give a comfortable roof over their heads, he said.

As the source of the problems are being identified, the ministry along with its departments will ensure that the work progress will be monitored closely to prevent existing issues repeating itself for the upcoming or future projects, he said.

“So these (problems) are considered a lesson to those involved in the (government) housing projects not to only think of building houses (without proper implementation).

“This will only add more costs (in terms of rectification or maintenance) without having what we expect (good PPRs),” he added.

Meanwhile during his visit, Jaujan said the problems have been identified for the PPR Taman Kinarut Ria which suffered cracks on its main structure and ground slabs believed to have been caused by slight ground cave-in.

He assured that the ministry will carry out the necessary action to help the tenants of the housing area, especially with it being labelled as “unsafe”.

However, he said that a specific timeframe to solve the issue could not be produced as there are several criteria and factors that need to be taken into account as this involves funds.

Despite that, he assured that it will be the ministry’s priority to help the affected tenants not only in terms of providing better homes but also their wellbeing during the rectification process.

“I will bring this matter at the cabinet as this problems need to be managed as soon as possible,” he added.

Jaujan also carried out house to house visit at the housing area in order to listen to some of the residents and the problems that they have been facing which included water shortage, clogged pipes and vibration on the structure which have led most of the resident worry of their safety.
