Forestry Dept seizes 45 logs, machinery

KENINGAU: The Sabah Forestry Department seized 45 timber logs in two raids at illegal logging areas on government lands in Keningau and Ranau, recently.Chief Conservator of Forests, Datuk Mashor Mohd Jaini, said the department’s Keningau Forestry Region enforcement team apprehended a man suspected of being involved in illegal land clearing and logging at Kampung Kasuing, Keningau, on Friday (Feb 28).

“The suspect was detained under Section 23(2) of the Forestry Enactment 1968 for collecting forest produce on State land, which carries a fine not exceeding RM500,000 and a jail term not less than a year but not exceeding 20 years.
“A tractor, 11 logs and about 300 wooden planks of various sizes were also confiscated,” he said.
On Feb 26, the department’s Kudat Forestry Region enforcement team uncovered a similar case at Kampung Tagibang, Ranau.
“The enforcement team seized five tractors believed used to collect logs on State land without any valid permit or approval.

“A total of 34 logs were also confiscated. During the raid, the team did not find any workers at the location while the five tractors were found at several separate locations,” said Mashor.
The case is being investigated also under Section 23(2) of the Forest Enactment 1968.

Mashor warned that state lands are not allowed to be encroached and exploited by any parties.
“Anyone who wishes to develop State Government lands for agriculture and other purposes must go through the approvals of related agencies and departments, such as the Land and Survey Department and the Forestry Department, ” he said.
