RM18,000 worth of fags seized in Papar
PAPAR: Some RM18,000 worth of contraband cigarettes were seized and a 28-year-old man was detained during an operation at a house in Kampung Bambangan, here, on Feb 29.

District Police Chief DSP Batholomew Ak Umpit said the operation was carried out following tip-off from the public where inspection was carried out on the house which was used to store the smuggled items.

“Police were able to seized hundreds of boxes in the 2pm operation. The case is being investigated under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967,” he told a press conference, here, Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a 23-year-old man, believed involved in drug distribution, was detained by police. Some 57.4gm of syabu worth RM3,500 were seized in a drug bust carried out on Feb 27.

Batholomew said surveillance was carried out by a team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department following a tip-off from the public here where the suspect was seen in his Proton Satria, parked by the road side.

“Inspection was carried out on the car where they found 12 transparent packets containing white substance that were kept in a small black bag. Police also found another bag containing cash worth RM804,” he said.

Based on interrogation, he said the suspect was also found positive for drugs but had no past criminal record.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

In another case, police rounded up 10 individuals, aged between 17 and 52-years-old, believed to be involved in gambling activities in the district. Batholomew said the arrest comprised of nine men and one woman, who were detained following a series of raids carried out from Jan 1 to March 1, this year.

“Ten mobile phones and two printers were seized in the operations as well as cash worth RM1,544,” he added.

Two of the cases were charged in court while eight more are still under investigation under the Common Gaming House Act 1953.

On another note, police detained some 92 individuals in operations against illegal gambling in the district for the year 2019.

He said arrests comprised of 73 men and 19 women, 17 to 52-years-old, along with the seizure of 84 mobile phones, 30 portable printers and cash worth RM25,564. The cases were charged under the Common Gaming House Act 1953.
