PUTRAJAYA: Changes to the new Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) format, to be introduced next year, will be announced as early as next week.

Education director-general Dr Habibah Abdul Rahim, who disclosed this, said the Examinations Syndicate would upload the information on the ministry’s website.

The changes to the format are due to the new Standard Based Curriculum for Secondary Schools introduced in 2017, she said.

“The ministry is in the process of finalising the format, we are almost done. Schools will receive the information from this month.

“It was brought to the highest level, the central curriculum committee, which has given its feedback on the format, ” she told reporters yesterday after announcing the SPM 2019 result analysis.

In an immediate response, National Union of the Teaching Profession secretary-general Harry Tan welcomed the early notification on the change of format.

He said this would prevent a situation of teachers facing the burden of having to explain the changes to parents and others.

“We do not want a repeat of the unpleasant experiences which followed whenever a change to our syllabus or exam format is imminent, with not enough time given to adjust. This is an examination which determines a student’s future, ” he said.

Parent Action Group for Education Malaysia chairman Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim said teachers preferred any format change to be communicated by the end of the first quarter to give students time to be ready for the examination. –  The Star
