Sabah’s potential to be discussed at World Islamic Economic Forum

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s potential to become an important trading hub in the region, thanks to its strategic location and abundant natural resources, will be among the topic of discussions at the upcoming World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) roundtable conference said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.He said conference would be held at the Sabah International Convention Centre from March 12- 13 and attended by over 200 participants, including from leading countries in the Islamic economy who will also see the investment opportunities in Sabah.

Shafie said the forum is also expected to serve as a platform for the State to increase its rapport with international participants to find out their views on the current world economy and to showcase the trade and investment opportunities that the State has to offer in order to attract more investors and in doing so to help drive Sabah’s economy further.
He said this after receiving a courtesy call from WIEF representative secretary-general Tan Sri Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak at his office at Wisma PPNS, Friday.
In addition to Asean countries, he said the conference would also include delegates from Middle East, Nepal, Finland and Pakistan among others.
Shafie said that for trading countries, Sabah would be a strategic place for them to operate from and to export goods to various destinations.

“The Sabah tourism sector would also be promoted at the conference as the State had the natural beauty and richness to attract visitors.”
“Among the potential sources of resources, for example when it comes to agriculture, forest conservation, we have some wealth in this sector and for example how we leverage existing minerals because we are a region in our country that has a lot of oil reserves, not only oil but also gas.

“Sabah has the advantage because the country is not only large in size but also in terms of fertile land and its location is a good place for us to produce food products to supply to countries like China, Japan without much wasting time for it to be shipped because of the closer distance which will help with cost reduction as well.”
Shafie said the State Government is aware of the current worldwide economic impact of Covid-19 but believes that this is temporary and expressed his confidence that when the vaccine is discovered, tourists will be back to Sabah and the State will continue to assist the country as a revenue source from the tourism sector which is the third largest revenue contributor to the country.
