A Likas homeowner is advised to contact the Department of the Environment regarding her claims that refuse is being openly burnt in the vicinity of the neighbourhood where she lives.

A Department spokeswoman said the individual would be required to specify the exact location where this was taking place.

“Our staff will inspect the neighbourhood to determine if there are any traces of the incinerated rubbish,” she said.

“If so, we will have to monitor the goings-on here to try and catch the culprits.”

Under the Environmental Quality Act, those caught open-burning can be slapped with a compound of up to RM2,000.

Should legal action be initiated, the offenders risk having to settle a maximum fine of RM500, 000, serve a maximum jail term of five years or both.

The resident should liaise with Hotline to find out which officer to see about this matter.

HONEY of Likas said she returned home one afternoon to find smoke rising from the one section of the verge along her housing road.

“I shared my observations with a neighbour who told me that he had noticed this problem for some time,” she said.

“He said the burning took place either around dusk or at dawn.”

She said many of the residents were forced to keep their doors and windows closed to minimise the nuisance caused by the smoke.

“My husband has developed a bad cough which I suspect might be a result of inhaling the fumes from the smoke regularly.

“At times the situation gets so bad that our eyes begin to water even when we are indoors.” (SS)
