Papar road verge turned into dumping ground
DISTRICT Council staff will check on the condition of the verge along the access road leading a Papar neighbourhood.

This follows a complaint that a section of the roadside had been transformed into a dumping ground for renovation and garden waste.

A Council spokesman said it would have to verify these claims.

“We will have to determine if maintenance of the stretch falls under our jurisdiction before proceeding with further action,” he said.

“Should this be the case, our personnel will try to identify the errant homeowner who left the debris on the verge.”

He said the culprit would be asked to remove this rubbish, failing which further action would be taken against him/ her.” The spokesman said the relevant agency would be alerted to the problem, if the stretch was not under the Council’s jurisdiction. DELORIS of Papar claimed that bricks and bits of concrete had been piling up at sections of the roadside for some time.

“I fear that road side has been transformed into an illegal garbage dump,” she said.

“Off late, I have noticed dead palm tree branches and dead creepers have been thrown here.” On top making the area look unsightly, she said the garbage also put pedestrians in harm’s way because they were forced to walk on the road.  “I cannot understand how the local authorities could be turning a blind eye to these goings-on.”

Deloris said this was not the first time that building debris had been indiscriminately disposed along the stretch.

“Last year, some of the heavier cement bits fell and damaged the water pipes leading to my house.”

“I had to engage a plumber to repair the leak caused by the irresponsible individual who threw this waste here.”

The rate-payer provided Hotline with the location of the illegal dump in question. This information was forwarded to the Council. (SS)
