RANAU: Ranau is still free from the Covid-19 infection although 19 people have been quarantined after their recent activities elsewhere put them at risk of contracting the virus.

Ranau District Officer Mohd Yassin Ibrahim said thus far, no one in the district has been confirmed positive of the coronavirus and hoped the status would be maintained until the pandemic is declared over. Regarding the 19, he said they were identified as being attendees of the four-day “Ijtima Tabligh” (religious) gathering at Masjid Jamek Sri Petaling in Selangor from Feb 29 to March 1, this year.

“These individuals are from Ranau and Kundasang who were sought by the Health Department and a majority of those from the district who had attended the gathering have undergone Covid-19 screening.

“While pending the results of the screening, all 19 were asked to be quarantined in their respective homes. Hopefully, all will turn out negative but for the time being we have to be very cautious,” he said.

According to Yassin, the Health Department is also tracing all those who have been in close contact with the 19 and hoped they will come forward to undergo health screening.

“This is the standard operating procedure (SOP) of the Health Department. Those who have been in close contact with any participants of the Tabligh programme must come forward, get screened and undergo self-quarantine for 14 days.

“Apart from that, anyone who knows anybody close to the 19 are urged to provide information as soon as possible in order to contain the situation before it gets out of hand. We have the obligation to maintain safety for the universal good,” he said.

Yassin also advised the people here not to panic and resort to panic buying, or spreading unconfirmed information and rumours which include messages which may bring down the dignity of others.

“Be mindful of all the precautions, advice and reminders from the Government through the Health Department. Practise hygiene wherever we go, avoid physical contacts with others when in public areas. Do not attend a large gathering unless necessary.

“We also want everyone to take the Covid-19 pandemic very seriously and constantly practise the notion that prevention is always better that cure. Keep ourselves as well as our loved ones safe,” he said.
