Tuaran: Prolonged hot weather and drought over the last two months have affected water supply in 18 villages in the district.

Tuaran District Officer, Mohd Sofian Alfian Nair said they received complaints from Kg Kapa, Minangkob, Bawang, Dopu, Ruhiang, Logkou Baru, Ulu Bakut, Bukit Giling, Kelawat and Bongol.

He said other villages affected include Kg Simpangan Lama, Hamad, Logub, Sinalapak, Kotunuan Baru, Penimbawan, Koporingan and Ponopuan.

“Today, we provide clean water supply to three villages –  Kg Kapa, Kg Minangkob and Kg Bawang.

“Water supplies to other villages will be provided on a regular basis and all residents will receive it twice a week during the dry season,” he said.

Solfian said the Tuaran District Public Defence Force (APM) as the Tuaran District Disaster Secretariat has found that the villages affected are using gravity water pipes.

“According to weather reports, this month is where the equatorial sea surface temperature is above average across the Pacific Ocean.

“In fact, the weak El-Nino situation is expected to continue until June with a 50 per cent probability,” he said.

Sofian said that as of Tuesday afternoon, two trucks carrying 18,180 litres of treated water from the Tuaran Water Department had been distributed to three villages.

“If the drought persists and there is no rain in the next few days, more villages are expected to face water problems,” he said.

On March 13, the Tuaran District Council has declared a drought in the area following prolonged hot weather over the past two months.
