RANAU: Tourists and visitors from outside are urged to refrain from visiting Ranau for the time being due to Covid-19 which the nation is fighting to contain.

Deputy Home Minister cum Ranau Assemblyman Jonathan Yasin said authorities in the district also do not want any suspected carriers of Covid-19 to enter the district.

“We would like to appeal to you (tourists and visitors) not to travel to Ranau during this 14-day (March 18-31) Movement Control Order (MCO) period announced by the Government to curb the spread of the virus.

“Having said that, I also implore you to please save you date to visit us after March 31. We welcome you so much to our place but not for the time being,” he said in a statement, Saturday.

Jonathan said the request was highly regretted as it may cause inconvenience to tourists and visitors, but needed to be done for the safety and good of everyone.

“It is our priority to ensure that no one would be infected with the deadly Covid-19. We sincerely hope our visitors will abide by our heartfelt request not to travel to Ranau for the next two weeks.

“However, in case you are already in Ranau, please do a medical check-up as soon as possible. Don’t take the risk, we are appealing to you not without any compelling reasons,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jonathan commended PDRM Ranau and other agencies for their efforts in ensuring Ranau town was quiet from any activities since the MCO came into effect on March 18.

He thanked all police personnel led by Ranau Police Chief DSP Sammy Newton for continuing to intensify the task of monitoring and complying with the MCO through roadblocks or SJR Op Covid-19.

“Kudos to all of our police personnel as well as other frontliners, including doctors, nurses and other health and medical staff, janitors, cleaners and those who work in supermarkets and stores, and all who are working during the MCO. You are the real unsung heroes,” he said.

Meanwhile, DSP Sammy assured that the police would continue to conduct similar operations. “We will continue our efforts to provide information to the public and monitor any violation of the Movement Restriction Order for the wellbeing and safety of our beloved Ranau district,” he said.

He urged the people to co-operate with the authorities in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic by staying at home for the next two weeks or so.

He also urged the public to refrain from circulating inaccurate or fake information in relation to the Covid-19 outbreak because such irresponsible action could create confusion and panic among the public.

“The police will not hesitate to take action against individuals found to be spreading false news or information. Those found guilty will be liable under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act to a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisonment of not more than one year, or both, on conviction,” he said.
