Kota Kinabalu: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is all set to receive swab samples for tests and detection to assist state health authorities in its fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

UMS Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Taufiq Yap Yun Hin said their labs and personnel were ready and expected to start receiving samples from the Sabah Health Department by mid-April.

“We have the equipment, labs, and trained personnel to do this without having to add any costs to existing university operations,” he said.

He said this after receiving funds from the State Government for the use of students having to observe the movement control order (MCO) in their hostels.

The university’s Biotechnology Research Institute (IPB) will be in charge of processing samples.

In thanking the state government and Sabah Credit Corporation for their assistance, Prof Taufiq said UMS would make sure that food and other necessities are enough for those forced to stay in their hostels throughout this period.
