Fined RM1,500 for spreading fake virus news

Kota Kinabalu: A 31-year-old man was fined RM1,500 or four months’ jail for spreading fake news on Covid-19.

Ronni Mujalipah pleaded guilty before Magistrate Ferhanshah Farene Mohd Ferdaus to the charge against him.

He was found spreading the fake news by sending a voice note in the WhatsApp group of a village claiming that there were 19 positive Covid-19 cases and asked people to move out of the village.

The crime took place at 8pm on March 19 in Kota Belud.

The offence, under Section 505 of the Penal Code provides for a jail term of up to two years or fine, or both, on conviction.
