One way in, one way out in Ranau
RANAU: Compliance with the Movement Control Order (MCO) here remains at 95pc as Ranau is the main route in central Sabah.

Ranau Police Chief DSP Sammy Newton said there are still vehicles on the road, especially those transporting essential goods and stopping to buy supplies or refuel before proceeding to their destination.

“Ranau is the only place with bank services other than Kundasang, as well as other services that are a crucial for the community.

“Rumours have also made the community nervous and some are making panic purchases. Some outlets in the interior are now experiencing a shortage of supplies.

“However, Ranau and Kundasang areas are vacant as soon as the premises closed in the evening. This increases the night time MCO compliance to 100pc,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sammy said Ranau PDRM also controlled the situation by setting up one way in and one way out for all vehicles wanting to enter the Ranau town area.

“In the second phase of MCO beginning April 1, PDRM in the district had taken steps to further tighten roadblocks, especially the entrance to Ranau n,” he said.

The move was taken in an effort to stop the Covid-19 from spreading.

“More stringent steps had to be taken when it was found that there are still many who do not want to obey the MCO instructions for various reasons.

“One of the popular reasons is to withdraw money from the bank to buy necessities. But what happened was that they took hours to hang out in the town. When they see the police, they hurry,” he said.

For the public’s reference, police had set the entrance to Ranau township as follows:

“Teko Circle and Temple Circle had been closed for entry and exit into town. After the re-alignment, only the junction in front of St Benedict is the only one open for entry and exit.

“The inter-district road block is still maintained at existing locations at KM5 of the Ranau-Telupid Road (near Lohan Junction), KM2 of the Ranau-Tambunan Road (in front of the golf course) and KM19 of the Ranau-Tamparuli Road,” he said.

Sammy added that road blocks at all locations including the commute to the city will continue 24 hours until new MCO directives are issued.

In the meantime, he advised the public to remain at home and control the movement in accordance with the instructions of the National Security Council (MKN).

He said homeowners who want to go out for daily necessities are advised to plan their expenses/purchases to avoid frequent outings.

“List the items you need to buy before you leave the house,” he said.
