Tuaran: Sabah Volunteers Department of Malaysia (Rela) will ensure that rural communities abide by the Movement Control Order (MCO) with its second phase ending on April 14.

Sabah Rela Director TPJR Mohammad Pauzi Jhumat said they would continue to work hand in hand with other agencies in the frontline against the Covid-19 outbreak, especially in the State.

He said quite a number of people in rural areas still went out of their house via shortcuts to avoid roadblocks.

“It is understood that most villages have already placed bunting and banners at their junctions so the public do not go into their village without valid reasons.

“However, besides gathering, there are still some outsiders who use the village route to avoid the blockade,” he said.

According to him, almost all the villages participated in Rela and played an important role in assisting the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) by monitoring public activities “Rela in every village has the right to reprimand any individual who disobeys the government’s order and informs the police for further action,” he said.

According to Mohd Pauzi, about 1,250 Rela members from the Disaster Management division are on the field daily to assist PDRM and ATMs in various tasks such as roadblocks, quarantine centre control as well as in enforcement and monitoring the MCO’s compliance. “Rela is also involved in patrolling, controlling borders and assisting in welfare activities throughout the MCO period.

“The current number of registered Rela members is increasing with a total of 302,887 members, comprising 177,826 men and 125,061 women, compared to only 258,066 members in 2018.
