Exposed chamber near fire hydrant
Wooden planks have been placed over the exposed chamber near this Kolombong fire hydrant.
THE Fire and Rescue Services Department will check on the condition of the hydrants servicing a Kolombong shophouse.

This follows a complaint that the metal cover for a chamber, near one of these structures, had been missing for months.

A shop operator voiced her concern about the “hole” in one section of the pavement for the building, located off Lorong Sri Kolombong.

The individual expressed her misgivings about the safety hazards the “hole” posed to pedestrians.

She has apparently made the local authorities aware of this problem on several occasions.

A Department spokesman said its staff would have to verify the proprietor’s claim about the exposed chamber.

“Should it prove to be true, then we will arrange to obtain a new cover to place over the chamber,” he said.

“This will be done once the necessary funds are available.”

VANNAH of Kolombong said the “hole” was hazardous to those going on foot.

“A misstep could result in someone twisting his or ankle or worse,” she said.

“I hate to think what could happen if an expectant mother or a senior citizen unwittingly walked into the hole.”

She said she had noticed this problem some time ago and several other shopkeepers had also shared their concerns about the dangers posed by the uncovered hole.

Vannah said a Good Samaritan placed some planks over the chamber but felt that this stop-gap measure would not be effective for long.

“The wood is too thin and could easily give way if one tread too heavily on the planks.

“I cannot understand how the authorities can be turning a blind eye to this problem.” She provided Hotline with the location of the uncovered chamber. This information was forwarded to the Department and City Hall. A spokesman for the latter said a check of its records revealed City Hall was responsible for maintaining the pavement in question.

“We will look into the complainant’s concerns and if need be, enlist the Department’s assistance to have the metal cover replaced as soon as possible,” he said. (SS)
