Kota Kinabalu: Some 83 Filipinos from peninsula returned home via a special flight organised by Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Sunday afternoon. Officers from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) welcomed the passengers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). The same aircraft transported stranded Malaysians in Manila on its return flight the same day.

The special flight was coordinated with the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and the Malaysian Embassy in Manila .

The embassy in Kuala Lumpur said most of the 83 passengers were Filipinos on temporary visit passes who were stranded because of the unexpected cancellation of the KL-Manila flights after March 18. Both Malaysia and the Philippines imposed travel bans to protect its peoples from possible spread of the deadly pandemic Covid-19.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Ambassador to Lebanon Bernardita Catalla died from Covid-19 on April 2. According to Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Charles C. Jose, Catalla worked in the foreign service for 27 years. She was assigned to Malaysia from 1995 to 2001. Filipinos in Sabah remember her for her energy and life-long dedication to improving the lives of overseas Filipinos.
