20pc discount not good enough, says Minister

TAWAU: Assistant state minister cum Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Datuk Jimmy Wong said the special 20 per cent discount on tax assessment by local authorities for this year would not help and suggest at least 50 per cent, or even free for one year.Jimmy said the people would not feel “anything” based on 20 per cent discount because many of them were, already suffering during this Movement Control Order (MCO) period.ADVERTISEMENT
Many businesses could not operate but need to pay to their workers.
He urged the State Government to reconsider the discount.
It is undeniable that many people might lose six months of income and it, will become a challenge for them to get that money back.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Shafie Apdal said all local authorities would give a 20 per cent discount on all assessments for 2020.
“Those who have already paid their quit rent and assessment for 2020 will be given the discount for 2021,” Shafie said, adding that the discount in the assessment fees would benefit over 300,000 people.

Meanwhile, Jimmy Wong urged Tawau police to strengthen security in all residential areas in Tawau during Movement Control Order (MCO) to protect the safety and rights of residents.
He said there are complaints from residents particularly in Sin Onn area whose houses had been burgled recently.
“Many residents at Sin Onn area are worried about their homes being broken into,” he said.
Jimmy said he contacted the district police chief ACP Peter Umbuas about this matter.
