TAWAU: Marine police foiled an attempt to smuggle in 4,000kg of live crabs estimated worth around RM400,000 from a neighboring country via Sg Tawau Lama, about 3.05am, Thursday.

Commanding Officer for Tawau Marine Police Operations Base, DSP Mohd Nazari Ismail, said two jongkong boats led by a local, 21, and a foreigner, 39, were detained while heading to Sg Tawau Lama from Sg Nyamuk, Indonesia.

He said upon inspection, the enforcement team found 250 boxes of live crabs, each weighing about 20kg, on the boats. The crabs were meant for export at RM80 per kg.

According to him, all the seized items, including the boats and engines, estimated worth about RM482, 000, will be handed over to Fisheries Department for further action.

Both detainees will also be investigated under Section 24 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342) and also MCO 2020.

Mohd Nazari said it was the first such case here since the implementation of the Movement Control Order on March 18.
