TAWAU: Tanjung Market and Tawau Fish Market will be the first public markets in Sabah to adopt the QRPay Biz, said Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) President Datuk Amrullah Kamal.

Amrullah said the cashless mode of payment would be implemented in both markets, beginning May 1.

“There are many benefits if a cashless society is created as it can speed up business transaction in the markets especially when each customer is only allowed to do their shopping in the markets for 20 minutes,” he said.

“The people need not queue up in banks to withdraw money as well which is one of the causes for traffic congestion here, and more importantly, it can help to break the chain of Covid-19 infection.

“Virtual transactions allow us to not hold money and indirectly it will reduce the risk of virus infection through physical cash.”

Aside from that, he said the cashless concept would discourage the public from carrying purses and thus reduce crime activities like snatch theft.

“I hope everyone will use the QRPay Biz method which is also widely used globally.

“People can still use cash and we will shift into a total cashless society concept when everyone is well-versed and comfortable with this method,” he said.

To this end, he said the MPT will work with Tawau Maybank on the implementation of the cashless payment system.

However, he said the usage of Maybank QRPay is not only limited to Maybank account holders only but will also be expanded to other banks.
