SANDAKAN: Officers from Battalion 15, General Operations Force (PGA) and police arrested two men suspected of smuggling in 300kg of fish from Boan island in Philippines to Tabangka island, here, Tuesday.

Commanding officer of PGA 15 Sandakan, Supt Toipi Lamat said its Ops Covid Shield team patrolled the waters around 4.30pm when they spotted a suspicious boat emerging from Boan island towards Sandakan.

“We managed to intercept the boat and upon inspection found three barrels of various kinds of fish believed from Boan Island. The two suspects, a 42-year-old local and a 23-year-old foreigner, admitted smuggling in the fish from a neighbouring country.”

Investigations also revealed that the suspects did not have a permit to fish. They were also found guilty of violating the Movement Control Act (PKP).

They were arrested following concerns over the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic from neighbouring countries.
