Eight boats detained for fishing near oil rig off KK

Kota Kinabalu: Marine police detained eight pump boats with six crew for illegal fishing at the ERB West oil rig, here, on Thursday.

Responding to information from Petronas, a team was deployed to the location at 9am and found two pump boats with two crew who were fishing. Sabah (Region 4) Marine Police Force (MPF) Operations Officer, Enturan Lageh, said Petronas had beforehand taken photos of six pump boats found fishing near the oil rig for identification.

“Based on the photos, the Marine Intelligence Unit (URM) arrested individuals and seized all remaining pump boats in Kg Pondo, Pulau Gaya.

“All suspects will be charged under the Prohibition Area Act 1959 and the boats seized were brought over to the Sabah Port and Wharf Department for further investigation,” he said in a statement. Enturan reminded all maritime communities against fishing in prohibited areas such as oil rigs.
