State-level Unduk Ngadau, Sugandoi competitions to be held this year

KOTA KINABALU: The State Government has decided to hold the two main competitions for Kaamatan Festival – Sugandoi and Unduk Ngadau, albeit not having the actual celebration at the end of this month.

State Kaamatan Festival organizing chairman Datuk Peter Anthony said both competitions will be held virtually in the selection phase.

“For Sugandoi, contestants are required to send their entry videos via the Facebook page of Sugandoi Artist Management (SAM),” he told a press conference, here, Sunday.

As for Unduk Ngadau, he said, entries can be sent to the official Facebook page of Unduk Ngadau 2020.

The competitions’ rules and regulations as well as other updates will also be posted on both pages.

Peter said, the prizes for the top winners for both competitions will also be retained from last year’s editions – RM18,000 for Unduk Ngadau titleholder and RM6,000 for Sugandoi winner.

The entry is open from Monday (May 25) until May 29.

“The contestants will be voted by the public on Facebook and on May 29, the top seven finalists will be announced.”

The finals for Sugandoi will be held virtually, on May 30, while the final stage for Unduk Ngadau will take place at the Hongkod Koisaan Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA), near here, on May 31.

“The finals for the Unduk Ngadau will be held according to the regulated standard operating procedure (SOP), and without the public audience.

“In attendance at the venue will be the panel of judges, organising crew and we will make sure it will not be more than 50 individuals,” he said.

Nevertheless, he said, the final event will be streamed live on Facebook.

Previously, it was reported, that KDCA Women Council has decided not to hold the Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan pageant this year, instead, they opted to conduct a webinar on May 31.

The webinar will focus on the achievements as well as the future direction of the longest-running cultural pageant in the State.

It was also reported that the State Sugandoi Kaamatan organising committee under KDCA has called for virtual entries for the State Sugandoi Kaamatan singing competition.

The organising chairman was also reported as saying that the winner of the competition will be regarded as the official State Sugandoi Kaamatan titleholder.
