Safa supports cancellation
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Football Association (Safa) supports the proposal by Football Association Malaysia (FAM) to cancel both the President Cup and Youth Cup competitions this season following the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic which had caused the two tournaments to be suspended since March.

FAM have recently sent out circulars to state FAs and clubs for feedback on their proposal to cancel the President Cup and Youth Cup.

In a press conference held on Sunday evening, Safa President Datuk Peter Anthony (pic) said the contracts of all the players from both squads will be terminated in June.

“We have made the decision to terminate the contracts of all the players from this season’s state President and Youth Cup squad in June. However, we have also given them the opportunity to return to the team if they are still eager and eligible to play for us next year.

“At the moment some of them have returned to their respective homes. We hope these talented players will continue to train hard and maintain their fitness and hopefully they can return and play for the state next year,” he said.

On the senior squad who are currently undergoing fitness training at home, Peter said they are still waiting for the decision from FAM and the Malaysia Football League (MFL) on whether the Super League will continue. “What we are led to believe is that the league may restart in September or October but we are still waiting for the outcome from FAM before we can make any decision.”

Meanwhile, Peter also announced that the new Borneo Cup tournament has been postponed to next year with the dates yet to be decided.

The tournament which will see eight teams from Sarawak, Kalimantan (Indonesia), Brunei, Labuan with four from Sabah taking part was supposed to be hosted by Safa in March.

He said the postponement was the result of the Covid-19 pandemic that not only hit the state but also affected almost the entire world. “It was due to be held in March but we were unable to do so due to the Movement Control Order (MCO) in order to tackle the Covid-19 issue in the country. “However, we will monitor  the situation closely from time to time and if there is no obstruction to have it  staged next year, then we will announce it later this year or early next year,” he said.
