Don’t mess up quarantine centres: Dept
Rubbish thrown indiscriminately by some who are staying at a quarantine centre in Sabah.
Kota Kinabalu: Some people ordered to undergo quarantine have vented their frustration over uncomfortable conditions at a centre by leaving the facility in a mess, according to Sabah Health Department Director Dr Christina Rundi.

She said she received complaints from agencies involved in the management of the quarantine centre that those who had completed the quarantine period had left a pile of rubbish behind. Dr Rundi did not name the quarantine centre.

She said the State Health Department understood the frustrations and the uncomfortable conditions these individuals underwent when they were forced to undergo their quarantine at such centres.

“But we urge all of them to maintain the cleanliness of the centres and also themselves. Cleanliness is everyone’s responsibility,” she said in a statement.

Dr Rundi also reminded the public to continuously ensure the safety of their family members, especially during this festive season.

“Let us work together in breaking the Covid-19 chain through practising the new norm, as anyone could be an asymptomatic agent of Covid-19,” she said. A total of 2,223 people are undergoing the 14-day mandatory quarantine at 55 designated centres in Sabah due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

There have been complaints about the condition of some of these centres, including the centres in Tawau and Lahad Datu.

Meanwhile, the Department is strengthening the Covid-19 Infection Surveillance System through screening activities on risk groups. Dr Rundi said such screening activities are being monitored by the State Crisis Preparedness Response Centre (CPRC) on a daily basis. “Among the screenings done were on Madrasah and Tahfiz school students as well as the residents and staff of senior care centres. Out of 617 Tahfiz school students who were screened before their schools were closed, six positive cases were detected,” she said.

She added that for senior care centres, 792 residents and staff in 16 centres were screened and no case was detected.

“The screenings for senior citizens will be continued in localities with Covid-19 cases, Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (Sari) cases and high population movement.”
