S’wak allocates RM4.6m for new kidney patients
KUCHING: The Sarawak government has allocated RM4.6 million under the Special Assistance for Kidney Patients involving 100 new patients from the lower-income group (B40) in the state.

State Welfare, Community Well-being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the special assistance would include clinical aid, kidney transplant and transport assistance as well as 30 hemodialysis machines.

The clinical aid comprises a one-off Arteriovenous Fistula (AVF) payment installment of up to RM3,000, Erythropoietin (EPO) injections up to RM240 per month and a maximum of RM200 per patient for every hemodialysis treatment session.

Speaking to reporters at the special aid presentation ceremony, Fatimah said RM5,000 kidney transplant assistance would be provided to cover the cost of accommodation and transportation for patients undergoing follow-up treatments for the period of two months at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

She said RM50 travelling allowance will be provided to each patient to undergo treatment while the old hemodialysis machines will be replaced with new ones at the health centres in the state.

Fatimah said under the hemodialysis machine assistance, her ministry has thus far channelled RM240,000 to the state Health Ministry to purchase six new machines for the use of patients statewide.

The ministry was also awaiting approval to buy the similar machines to be placed at several rural clinics in Dalat, Debak, Song, Tatau and Batu Niah.

Those who are eligible to apply for the aid are Malaysians who were born in Sarawak and from the B40 group, as long as they are not a civil servant or government pensioner or Social Security Organisation (Socso) contributor and not receiving any assistance such as transportation and treatment.

Application form can be obtained at any Social Welfare Department branches in the state, she said. As of 2018, Sarawak recorded a total of 3,317 kidney patients and of the total, 2,920 of them were undergoing hemodialysis treatment.
