Tuaran: The Public Works Department (PWD) will upgrade the drainage system in order to address the frequent flash floods problem along Jalan Tuaran-Kota Kinabalu, near Taman Sri Rugading, here.

Its Principal Assistant Director (Pan Borneo Project branch), Mohd Shamsul Nizam Abd Wahid, said among the steps to be taken is adding another water outlet.

“We (PWD) will improve the existing drainage system along the affected roads which contributes to flooding in the area during incessant rain.

“This will be done in collaboration with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) so as to smoothen the flow of water and prevent stagnation in the system,” he said.

Mohd Shamsul, who is also a Sabah PWD engineer, said this after accompanying Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau on a visit to the affected road along Jalan Tuaran-Kota Kinabalu facing Taman Sri Rugading, on Friday (May 29).

Meanwhile, Tangau who is also Tuaran Member of Parliament, said such measures had been included in the design of the Pan Borneo Highway project but had been delayed to be in compliance with the Movement Control Order (MCO).

“I have been briefed by PWD and contractors involved on a construction plan that focuses on roads near Telipok and Tuaran.

“The plan shows several upgrades, including improvements to the drainage or irrigation systems, apart from building systematic roads, to ensure the flood problem is fully resolved,” he said.

Tangau, who is also Trade and Industry Minister, said the project also involves land acquisition, especially those in residential areas near roads.

“I believe this can be solved with the cooperation of PWD and DID through careful drafting of the project plan.”

Also present was Tuaran District Officer Mohd Sofian Alfian Nair.
