Ranau cops seize 200 boxes of beer at roadblock

RANAU: District police seized 200 boxes of contraband unlicensed liquor at a roadblock here on Monday.The seizure was carried out by a team of officers and policemen from the Ranau District Police Headquarters (IPD) at a SJR at Kilometer 5, Ranau Road-Telupid.ADVERTISEMENT
Ranau District Police Chief Deputy Superintendent Sammy Newton confirmed the incident where they arrested a van driver who was driving suspiciously at 4.30pm.
He said a search of a van driven by a local in his 50s found a number of beverages hidden in the passenger side of the van.
“Police detained the driver and seized 100 boxes of Binchen beer and 100 boxes of Holland beer. Each box contained 24 cans of drinks that make up a total of 4,800 cans.

According to Sammy, the case is being investigated under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967 (Act 253).
“If convicted, a fine of not less than ten times the value of the goods and not more than twenty times the value of the goods or fine of RM100,000 (whichever is higher) or imprisonment of not less than 6 months and not exceeding 5 years or both could be imposed upon the suspect,” he added.
