1,175 virus test results from immigration detention depots pending

PUTRAJAYA: There were 93 new positive Covid-19 cases reported Wednesday involving only two Malaysians while the rest were foreigners, thus bringing the cumulative total to 7,970 while no deaths were recorded.

Health Director-General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah (pic) said all 93 new cases were infected in the country.

“From the 91 cases involving non-Malaysians, 55 cases were from the Bukit Jalil Immigration Detention Depot and 36 from the Pedas Cluster, while the two local cases involved a tahfiz student and one from the market cluster,” he said at the daily media conference on Covid-19 development, here, Wednesday.

Following that, the total number of active cases with Covid-19 infectivity is 1,324 and they have been isolated and given treatment.

He said 61 patients have recovered and were discharged Wednesday while six more patients are still in the intensive care unit with two of them requiring respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham said there were 466 positive cases recorded from 4,908 samples taken from four clusters at the Immigration Detention Depot in Bukit Jalil, Sepang, Semenyih and Putrajaya. From the total number of samples taken, 3,267 were found negative while 1,175 were still waiting for results.

He said from the positive Covid-19 cases at detention depots, 123 were from India, Bangladesh (108), Indonesia (76), Myanmar (66), Pakistan (45), China (18), Sri Lanka (7), Nepal (5), Cambodia (4), Philippines (3), Egypt (2) and one each from Laos, Nigeria, Libya, Syria, while the details of four cases were still being updated.

Commenting on the Pedas cluster, Dr Noor Hisham said there were 36 new positive cases reported, taking the total number of positive Covid-19 cases in the cluster to 256.

From the total, 14 cases involved locals, while 242 cases were among foreigners from Nepal (136), Bangladesh (55), Myanmar (26), Indonesia (21), India (3), and one from Vietnam. “The new positive cases were detected from repeated screenings when they were at quarantine centres. They are still being isolated at quarantine centres and therefore do not pose infection risk to the people,” he said.

Dr Noor Hisham urged employers to play a bigger role in combating the spread of Covid-19 among their foreign workers by providing education on hygiene practices at the workplace and living areas as well as on preventive measures.

“Besides providing conducive accommodation to ensure safe social distancing is practised, there should monitoring to ensure infection prevention measures are practised by workers at the workplace as well quarters,” he said.

Employers are also required to screen foreign workers for Covid-19, especially in the construction sector and ensure safety in all Red Zones, as directed by the government while foreign workers in Green and Yellow Zones are also encouraged to be screened on the initiative of the respective employers, he said.
