Quake, Covid fail to deter climbers
Remembering those who perished five years ago in the earthquake while practicing social distancing.
RANAU: It’s been five years since the tragic earthquake which claimed the lives of 18 climbers and mountain guides on Mount Kinabalu and a solemn revisit to the memorial monument on Friday brought back painful memories.

“We lost four mountaineering friends and climbers. The sadness and challenges of rescue are still fresh in our memories and will never be forgotten.

“The magnitude of the quake, which is beyond our control, further refutes the notion that the State is safe from disasters because it is located outside the Pacific,” said State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew.
