Kota Kinabalu: A 25-year-old man, who was previously charged with eight counts of illegal deposit-taking and cheating, was on Friday charged with another three counts of similar offence involving RM76,600.

Mohd Wannor Ramdan Awang, who was brought before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Wannor allegedly accepted RM7,800 from one Koroh Gibok @ Halinah as deposits for Bitcoin investment without a valid licence, as provided for under Section 10 of the Financial Services Act 2013.

He was accused of committing the offence at 11.17am on Aug 23, 2019 at Maybank in Karamunsing.

The charge under Section 137(1) of the Financial Services Act 2013 is punishable under Section 137(2) of the same Act, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years or fine of up to RM50 million, or both, if found guilty.

On the second and third count, Wannor was accused of cheating Koroh into believing that he would make a profit payment for the Bitcoin investment.

Wannor’s alleged trick caused Koroh to bank in RM7,800 and another RM68,800 to his bank account at 11.17am on Aug 23, 2019 at Maybank in Karamunsing and at 3.48pm on Aug 26, 2019 at the same place.

The offence under Section 420 of the Penal Code provides for a jail term of between one year and 10 years, and whipping and fine, on conviction.

Inspector Suzie @ Stephanie Kupit, prosecuting, proposed bail at RM6,000 on each charge.

Wannor, who was not represented, requested for a lower bail, saying he was the sole breadwinner for his family.

The court set Aug 12 for case management and offered Wannor bail at RM2,000 in two sureties on each charge.
