KOTA MARUDU: A family of seven were made homeless when fire destroyed their house at Kg Teritipan, Jalan Pitas, on Thursday.

House owner, Asmara Madrad, 40, said he was at work when his in-laws informed him of the fire incident that occurred at 6.50am. He rushed home to find the house he built with his family members for the past four years on fire.

“I am however grateful that my wife and five children survived the incident. “My wife and children were only able to save themselves because they panicked and forgot about the important documents. At the time of the incident, my wife who were at home with my children said she saw the switch on the refrigerator on fire,” he said adding that upon seeing the fire, his wife immediately grab their children and brought them to safety.

Meanwhile, Kota Marudu Fire and Rescue station Chief Rony Sikawan said a 7.01pm distress call prompted five firefighters led by Kamarudin Sabanah to the scene located some 18 kilometres from the station.

According to him, the firefighters managed to bring the fire under control by 7.28am.

“The operation ended at 7.54am and the cause of the incident as well as estimated loss is still being investigated,” he said.
