Strong winds uproot tree
Tuaran: Some 20 residents had a shock when strong winds caused a 30-metre tall mango tree to fall on two fences (pic) at Taman Bolong Villa, here, Saturday. One of the residents, Azman Malikon, 39, said nobody was injured in the 12.30pm incident. “My family and I were home when it happened. The wind was so strong that it caused the trees around our house to shake,” he said. He said it was only moments later that the mango tree fell onto the fences of the playground and a nearby house which is only about 10 metres from their house. “Many residents were shocked and frightened by the sight of the huge tree and the condition of the house surroundings,” he said. He said rain and more strong winds came soon after, prompting him to call the Civil Defence Force for assistance. Tuaran Civil Defence Force Officer Paulina Francis said a team was deployed to the scene after being alerted about 1.20pm.

“The team arrived to find two fences made of concrete and steel under the tree, before proceeding to clear the site,” she said. “No injury or severe damages were reported,” she said, adding that it took the team about two hours to cut the tree and clear the site. The operation ended at about 3.30pm.
