SEMPORNA: The Sabah Government bought nearly 15 million face masks and hand sanitisers for the people in the State.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said more than 200 schools in Sabah have been supplied with face masks and hand sanitisers before the reopening on June 24.

"This is so that when the schools reopen, not only social distancing is important but face masks should also be worn," he told reporters after handing over keys to Bubul Ria People's Housing Project (PPR) units, here, Sunday.

Sixty families received the rent-to-own housing units after their homes in Kampung Sri Aman here were destroyed in a fire on June 4.

Meanwhile, in TAWAU, 40 households comprising 158 fire victims at Lorong Haji Sundu Batu 2, Jalan Apas, here, on Sunday received food and cash donations from Apas Assemblyman Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan.

The assemblyman from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia said the donation was hoped to help ease the burden of the fire victims.

“We are deeply saddened and concerned about the fate of those affected by the disaster and hope they continue to be patient,” he said when met at the scene, Sunday.

To date, 90 voluntary organisations, politicians, private companies and individuals have come forward to provide assistance to the victims, including handing over face masks.

On Wednesday, about 20 homes, six cars, four motorcycles and a convenience store were destroyed in a fire with losses estimated at nearly RM1 million.
