Five fined RM5,000 for online gambling

Kota Kinabalu: Five people were fined a total of RM5,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here Wednesday for engaging in online gambling using their respective smartphones.

Yap Kong Phin, Usman Al Humad, Md Sari Zinar, Muhamad Hizal and Stella Justus pleaded guilty separately before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun to committing the offence on June 11.

Yap, Usman, Sari and Muhammad were arrested inside separate premises in Manggatal and Kepayan Ridge, while Stella was arrested at a staircase of a building at Jalan Tuaran. 

They were each ordered to pay a fine of RM1,000 or seven days’ jail.

The court heard from the prosecution that the police acted on information of gambling activities in the said area and arrested the five for engaging in online gambling.

The police also seized the five’s smartphones and cash of RM1,362, RM206, RM614, RM100 and RM101 from Yap, Usman, Sari, Muhamad and Stella, respectively.

Yap, Usman, Sari, Muhammad were charged under Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, while Stella was charged under Section 7(2) of the same Act, each of which provides a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months’ jail, or both, on conviction.

The court also ordered all the seized money from the five to be forfeited.
