KENINGAU: Keningau Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) division Chief, Datuk Jake Jikulin Nointin wants Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) to monitor all houses in Keningau villages to ensure safe wiring.

He noted that some houses in the district are still using old wiring and have never been replaced them with new wiring.

He said the SESB should advise these homeowners to replace the old wiring with new ones.

“I hope the SESB will monitor the houses in this district and replace the old wiring with new wiring.

“At the same time, SESB must carry out the latest wiring installation standards based on the standards set by SESB for electrical wiring contractors,” he said.

Jake, who is also Warisan Central Supreme Council Member, learned that the fire that razed a semi-permanent two-storey house in Kampung Mempikit recently was caused by electrical wiring.

He said the house was destroyed in the fire incident and that all household items including clothes, household appliances and personal documents were also destroyed.

“We are thankful that there were no casualties but the losses incurred by the owner amounted to hundreds of thousand ringgit,” he told reporters after visiting the victim in Kampung Mempikit while at the same time handing donation and food aid to them.

Jake also urged homeowners in the district to consider purchasing insurance policies, particularly fire policy insurance.

He said this could ease the burden on homeowners in the event of a disaster incurring on their property.

“I believe that most homeowners, especially farmers and those under B40 category, will not have the capability to own a new home if it was destroyed by fire.

“But if they have insurance policy, they have a better chance of owning a new house,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jake urged the Keningau Fire and Rescue Department to consider installing GPS on Keningau area so as to reduce the incidence of arriving late to the scene.

The causes and losses of the fire in Kg Mempikit are still being investigation.
