Mahathir backs Shafie as PM candidate after impasse with Anwar

Kota Kinabalu: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has thrown his support behind Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal as the opposition's Prime Minister candidate in the event of snap polls.

Mahathir, who previously was seeking a return to the prime ministership for a third time, reportedly said he will campaign for the Parti Warisan Sabah President and explain to the grassroots the reason he had picked him. 

The former Bersatu Chairman declared this during a meeting with his faction of the splintered party on Friday following a week-long impasse within Pakatan Harapan parties which were split between rooting for him and PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as their Prime Minister candidate.
