Eight jailed or fined for drug-related offences

Kota Kinabalu: Eight people were penalised by the Magistrate’s Courts here Monday for committing drug-related offences.

Four of them, Rukinin Ratimin, Joey Sonny, Md Arif Abd Ghani and Moha Hafish, pleaded guilty separately to having syabu.

Rukinin and Joey were sentenced to 13 months’ jail each.

Arif and Moha were fined RM3,000 or 10 months’ jail and RM1,900 or 10 months’ jail, respectively.

The four had committed an offence under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years’ jail, or both, on conviction.

The other four, Alex Alfonso, Hairul Sazum, Md Daniel Abdullah and Apizan Daeng, admitted separately to taking syabu.

They were tested positive for the drug through urine tests conducted on them, said the prosecution.

Alex, Daniel and Apizan were each handed five months’ jail, while Hairul was ordered to pay a fine of RM2,000 or five months’ jail.

They were also ordered to be placed under the supervision of police and the National Anti- Drug Agency for two years thereafter.

They were charged under Section 15(1) of the of the Dangerous Drugs Act, which provides a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years’ jail on conviction.
