Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has announced that the free additional 1GB Internet data allocation is now valid for 24 hours per day, instead of the previous 8am to 6pm time limit.MCMC released a Penjana FAQ today explaining that telcos such as Maxis, Celcom, Digi, U Mobile and Unifi Mobile will continue to support users who are working or learning from home during this period.ADVERTISEMENT
“This offer is dedicated to accessing a range of productivity and information-related services,” MCMC said in the statement, adding that the offer is available from now until Dec 31.
Apart from the 1GB data, telcos will also continue to offer zero-rated access to government applications and portals like MySejahtera, MyTrace and Gerak Malaysia, as well as the Ministry of Health website, local and federal government and health organisation sites, Prime Minister’s office website and eKelas (Maxis).
Note that the free 1GB Internet data cannot be utilised for gaming, music, video and social media applications such as PUBG Mobile, Spotify, YouTube and Telegram. Users will have to utilise their own existing data plan to access video-streaming and entertainment sites.
A check by LifestyleTech showed that the list of sites that are not included as part of the free access seemed to be the same for all the telcos, although that may be subject to change, and that so far WhatsApp seemed to be absent from the list. LifestyleTech has reached out to MCMC for details.ADVERTISEMENT
Celcom users can redeem the 1GB data through the Celcom Life app. The company also announced an extended payment period where all postpaid customers will be given seven days extended payment from their current due date. For example, if the bill is due within March 19 to May 12, the payment period is extended to March 26 to May 19. More information is available on the Celcom FAQ page.
Maxis announced that customers can redeem the 1GB data from the Maxis or Hotlink app while Digi customers can do so by dialing *338*1*1# for prepaid or 238*1*1# for postpaid. Alternatively, theycan also check out the MyDigi app for more information.
