Uncovered structure at Queen E hazardous
A warning sign, traffic cone and cement slab were put in place to minimise the hazards.
Kota Kinabalu: The government concessionaire has placed a cement slab over an exposed section of the drainage at the base of the staircase leading up a slope along Jalan Rumah Sakit, just after the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Rotary Hostel.

A spokeswoman for the firm said this was done shortly after it became that a drainage structure on the verge was exposed.

“An ‘Awas (Caution)’ sign and a traffic cone were also placed near the structure to alert pedestrians about the potential dangers of the ‘hole’ in the roadside,” she said.

She said these actions were only intended as temporary relief.

“We hope to have a grill, or a metal cover, placed over the structure and are sourcing for funds to this end.”

The spokeswoman said maintenance work on the road-shoulder, including the staircase was carried out as and when it became necessary to do so.

STEPHEN of Kepayan decried the hazards posed by the ‘hole’ on the verge near the foot of the stairs.

“Some civic-minded individual placed four twigs over the exposed section to prevent those going on foot from accidentally injuring themselves,” he said.

“Should the streetlights in the area breakdown, or be rendered inoperative due to a blackout, then anyone going on foot could unknowingly step into the hole.”

He said it was only a matter of time before a pedestrian wound up injuring himself/ herself. “You could wind up twisting your ankle or falling on the road and into path of oncoming vehicles as a result of this.”

Stephen said he hated to imagine what would happen if a pregnant woman or senior citizen accidentally walked onto the uncovered structure.

“I hope the local authorities are not waiting for this to happen before they intervene.”

He provided Hotline with the location of exposed section of the verge. This information was forwarded to the concessionaire and City Hall. A spokeswoman for the latter said a check of its records revealed that Jalan Rumah Sakit was not in City Hall’s road register.

“Nevertheless, we have taken note of the resident’s concern and forwarded this matter to the relevant agency,” she said. “This is the most that we can do as the stretch, including the road-shoulders, is not under our jurisdiction.”
