Kota Kinabalu: Parti Warisan Sabah Information Chief Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob (pic) stood by his party President, Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, describing him as a person who knows his limits of responsibility. Dr Yusof was responding to a statement by former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak who accused Shafie of having often rejected open tenders and preferring limited tenders while serving in Najib’s Cabinet as Rural Development Minister.

Dr Yusof in a statement said Shafie performed his duties and that he (Shafie) applied through the proper channel. “Applying or asking is far better than stealing,” he said.

“Shafie knows the limits of responsibility and respects his superiors. He did not turn his back on his superior. That’s why he applied,” said Dr Yusof.
Najib in a Facebook posting claimed that when Shafie’s requests were rejected, he would write letters of appeal.
“It’s rare for people to write such appeal letters. There was no other Minister like him. It came to a point that his applications for limited tenders, and letters of appeal piled up at the Finance Ministry,” Najib was quoted as saying.

Dr Yusof went on to say that he believes that Shafie had applied not for himself but those who seek his help, especially Umno people.
“What happened between friends or joint affairs in the past does not need to be disclosed. This is like a husband and wife, of course they know the outside and inside of both sides. It is not good and rather immoral to reveal things or weaknesses of a husband or wife when they are divorced. Maybe one day, they might be husband and wife again. So don’t put one to shame when you have shared secrets together,” said Dr Yusof.

Najib said Shafie was annoyed that his requests were often denied by the federal government, then run by the Barisan Nasional. Shafie was the Rural and Regional Development Minister in 2013, while Najib was Prime Minister and Finance Minister.
Shafie was removed from his ministerial posts during a cabinet reshuffle in 2015, after openly criticising the 1MDB scandal. He later formed Warisan and became Sabah Chief Minister when his party and allies took control of the Sabah State Government at the 2018 general election.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

His name was recently proposed by former Pakatan Harapan chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the PH candidate to be prime minister should the coalition win the next general election.
Najib said: “Maybe when he becomes the ninth Prime Minister, he can approve the request for limited tenders”. He also claimed that Shafie was already doing so as Sabah Chief Minister.
