Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian Inland Revenue Board (LHDNM) warned the public to be wary of tax fraudsters using its name and logo. The syndicate modus operandi involves directing the victim to make outstanding Sales and Services Tax (SST) payments by issuing a fake letter using the LHDNM name and logo to deceive the public.

“The counterfeit letter contains the victim’s personal details including banking information and the amount of tax due to be paid, accompanied with a fake signature of an LHDNM officer.

“Victims can easily identify this false letter because the SST is handled by another agency and it is not under LHDNM’s management,” the board said in a statement. LHDNM urged the public to be vigilant on suspicious calls, email or letters and to obtain verification from the board first. “Any tax payments must also be made directly to LHDNM’s account and not to any personal or third party accounts,” it stressed. For inquiries and further information, the public may visit LHDNM’s official site at www.hasil.gov.my or contact the board’s Care Line at 03-8911 1000.
