Couple faces death over 4kg Syabu

TAWAU: A couple may face the death sentence if found guilty for trafficking in 4,193gm of Methamphetamine (Syabu) from Peninsular Malaysia at Tawau Airport early this month. Aw Fatt Sin, 53, and Kam Li Lee, 49, nodded when the charge was read to them in Bahasa Malaysia before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus. However, no plea was taken from both.ADVERTISEMENT
The charge read that they were found with the drug at the Passenger Checking section of Tawau Airport at 11.45am on July 1, which is an offence under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
It is punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act and read together under Section 34 of the Penal Code which provides mandatory death sentence, if convicted.
The court fixed Aug. 18 for case mention and did not offer bail because such cases are not subject to bail.
Both accused would remain in Tawau Prison until the hearing date.ADVERTISEMENT
Earlier, Prosecuting Officer from Malaysian Royal Custom (JKDM), Juhari Jabbar, applied for the date of mention while awaiting the chemist report.
The woman accused (Kam) raised her hand and told the magistrate she was not involved in the case.

However, Dzul Elmy told her she would get the opportunity to prove it during the trial.
Both accused were among four suspects held by Customs personnel during Ops Ice Break II 2020 and Ops Benteng for trafficking in 23kg of Methamphetamine worth RM1.15 million via flight between July 1 and 4, this year.
