TAWAU: District Health Officer, Dr G Navindran (pic) said dengue fever cases in Tawau recorded a 36 per cent decrease with 342 cases so far this year compared to 536 cases during the same period last year.Navindran said the Health Department is always taking measures to combat the spread of dengue outbreaks through precautions such as mist spraying at breeding grounds or high risk locations.ADVERTISEMENT
He said the dengue fever cases in Tawau are still worrying even though the number of cases has decreased but full cooperation from the communities is much needed to prevent the spread of dengue fever.
He said for example, there were residential areas or villages that had been cleaned before but become locality of active dengue outbreaks due to garbage dumping, resulting in the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes.
He said stern action would be taken against residents who refused to cooperate in the aspect of hygiene at their surrounding at all times.
Since January until July 16, a total of 101 investigating papers were opened under Section 13(1) of Destruction of Disease-Bearing Insects Act 1975 (Amendment 2000), compared to 137 investigating papers throughout last year.ADVERTISEMENT
Compounds have been issued to residents who were keeping Aedes mosquito larvae in water-holding containers.
Navindran disclosed that Tawau has recorded 42 outbreak localities with six villages and housing estates declared as active dengue outbreak areas - Taman Semarak Fasa Dua A, Muhibbah Raya Fasa Satu, Kampung Kongsi 8, Kampung Pasir Putih Blok A, Taman Hilltop and Sungai Imam.
