Kota Kinabalu: The aquaculture industry has great potential with boneless fish in high demand by countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines and Dubai, according to State Agriculture and Food Industry Minister, Datuk Junz Wong.

“Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal has asked me to look into ways to grow this industry and its downstream sectors so that more Sabahans could participate in milkfish farming,” he said.

“With more locals participating in the aquaculture sector, we will be able to meet the demand of the export markets and in turn enable Sabahans to generate higher incomes,” he added.

The downstream processing of milkfish has enabled Sabah based Champ Quality Seafood to produce export quality fish packages which have high demand in Indonesia, Philippines and Dubai.

Its Director, Jonathan Wong, gave Shafie and Junz a tour of the aquaculture farm in Tuaran recently where they observed the harvesting process and de-boning room.

Junz lauded Jonathan for his passion to venture into aquaculture industry in Sabah.

“We are grateful for the valuable insights given by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie and Datuk Junz on our company’s prospects and acknowledging the quality of our milkfish and products.”

Also present was Jonathan’s mother, Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen.
