Kota Kinabalu: A 39-year-old man was detained after holding his two children hostage for close to three hours in Taman Seri Kiansom, Inanam, near here, on Monday.

The man was believed to be armed with a screwdriver in the 4.50pm incident. Circumstances leading to the ordeal were not immediately established at press time. City Police Chief ACP Habibi Majinji did not elaborate except that the man was arrested at 7pm.

“Investigations are continuing,” he said, when contacted.

In January, last year, police shot and killed a man in his 30s who took a two-year-old girl hostage at knifepoint after a dramatic two-hour standoff with officers at Taman Telipok Ria.

Another incident was in June 2017 where a 30-year-old jobless man who felt dejected when his former wife did not come home for Hari Raya from Johor, held his two children inside his room and threatened to kill them at Kg Suang Prai.
